Ahhh the delight of the habit of reading during the season of fall. It begins with an intention. Then a behavior. Then a habit. Then a practice. Then it is second nature. Then it simply becomes who you are. Everyone seems to know that books are an integral part of my existence. When I open the doors to my lofty book store, and explorers walk into the space- they instantly notice that the books are hand curated and so they feel comfortable asking me what books I would recommend.
I usually ask a series of questions to unveil what books will add the most value to my customers mind in search of the right words. I’m the kind of individual who craves freedom, always seeking to view life from a new lens. And yet I always ask the simple open ended questions which usually end up in profound understandings of a person's feelings. “ What is the most sensible thing you have read? What belief do you hold that some disagree with? If you could choose one mandatory book for all U.S high school students to read, what would it be? “ Please feel free to answer the questions yourself in the comment section- I would love that.
Anyhow, of the hundreds of books that I’ve recommended, there are a couple that instantly come to mind when fall comes around. They invoke a sensation of connection and peace in a transitional solitude. I highly recommend reading these with a nicely lit candle and a cup of tea. Sometimes I even reread myself after a good description to a customer. Below are a few such books.
Oh, good gigantic smile o’ the brown old earth,
This autumn morning! How he sets his bones
To bask i’ the sun, and thrusts out knees and feet
For the ripple to run over in its mirth;
Listening the while, where on the heap of stones
The white breast of the sea-lark twitters sweet.
That is the doctrine, simple, ancient, true;
Such is life’s trial, as old earth smiles and knows.
If you loved only what were worth your love,
Love were clear gain, and wholly well for you:
Make the low nature better by your throes!
Give earth yourself, go up for gain above!
Robert Browning

At the same time, he’s being blackmailed by a powerful professor who threatens to claim he has assaulted her, when in fact the truth is just the opposite, trapping him in a he-said-she-said with a white woman that, in this society, Pi knows he will never win. That time of year thou mayst in me behold
When yellow leaves, or none, or few, do hang
Upon those boughs which shake against the cold,
Bare ruined choirs, where late the sweet birds sang …
